MISSION AND VALUES:
UNIFEM Canada was founded in 1993 with a vision to promote Equality for all Women. The committee works to enhance the work of the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM)-part of UN Women in advising countries to implement the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDG's) so as to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment by:
+Supporting countries in advancing gender equality in line with national priorities and
+Supporting action on gender equality throughout the United Nations development cooperation system
The humanitarian and gender-based work of UNIFEM Canada is strongly resonated in the values it promotes, such as cooperation, accountability, integrity, creativity and respect for each other and one's work.
UNIFEM CANADA'S WORK:
The Canadian National Committee of the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM Canada) raises UNIFEM's profile and promotes its work in Canada; raises funds for UNIFEM projects; creates awareness within the Canadian government for increased funding for UNIFEM projects and encourages non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to promote and support UNIFEM.
Each year, UNIFEM Canada hosts two important national events to rally support for gender equality causes and raise funds to supplement the work done in the developing countries through the UNIFEM headquarters in New York.
1) Annual UNIFEM Canada Award Ceremony
+Each year UNIFEM Canada bestows an award to a Canadian who has made outstanding contributions towards UNIFEM's gender equality goals .
2) Annual Mother's Day Card Campaign
+Show your mother that you love her and that you support UNIFEM. When you make a donation to UNIFEM Canada, your mother will receive an attractive Mother's Day card with a personal message from you.
THE PRESENT AND THE FUTURE:
In present times, UNIFEM Canada, under the leadership of its President Almas Jiwani, has grown into a national organization of women and men working to support the United Nations in its efforts to empower women and seek gender equality worldwide. The Board of Directors and its subsidiary chapters in Toronto, Ottawa,Montreal, and Winnipeg develop awareness campaigns and raise funds for gender equality programmes through educational seminars and fundraising activities.
